Lab 3 is the BLAST Lab, an online lab where you can compare the DNA sequences of different organisms.

BLAST Lab-0

This is a PowerPoint video of the BLAST Lab, showing you step by step on how to do it. It also discusses results and potential errors.

Example Data[]

Cladogram

This is a result of the BLAST.

Data could be the sequence comparison, or the cladogram from the distance tree. On the right is the distance tree of Gallus gallus.

Example Calculations[]

Gallus Gallus

Calculations would include comparing the nucleotides to find the similar organism. On the right is the percent of the nucleotides that are found to be similar. The more similar they are, the more identical it is.

Practice Problems[]

Connections[]

The nucleotides relate to the first unit, when we talked about biochemistry. This relates because of the fact that the nucleotides are made up of nucleic acids. Another relation would be evolution. This is related because the data shows that evolution occured over time. Finally, another relation would be classification. By the decent of different organisms due to evolution, this caused the class system to come into play.
